More than two-thirds of coal extracted underground is done by a continuous miner, a tractor with a mounted cylindrical grinder that breaks coal away from the seam. The continuous miner deliberately leaves undisturbed pillars of rock and coal in the mining area to create natural supports for the ceiling. This is known as room and pillar mining. When most of the coal seam has been extracted, the pillars then are mined one by one, allowing the roof to naturally cave in.
Twenty percent to 30 percent of mined coal underground is from longwall mining. This is performed by a mechanical cutter that shears coal off from a panel on the seam. The panel being worked on may be up to 800 feet in width and 7,000 feet in length. Mined coal is deposited onto a conveyor that moves the coal to a collection area. Hydraulically powered shields over the machine provide ceiling support. Longwall mining is more efficient than room and pillar mining, but the equipment is more expensive.
For extracting coal which lies close the surface, huge drag-line shovel machines remove the topmost layers of soil and rock, exposing the coal, which is then removed by smaller machines. Surface mining may involve removing sections of hills or top layers of a flat surface area. The layers of rock and dirt covering the coal are reserved for until the coal is removed, at which point the the dirt and rock is replaced, the mine covered over, and the environment restored as much as possible to its original condition.
Conventional mining employs crews of miners who use explosives and drills to extract coal, which is then loaded onto cars for transport to the surface. This method presents higher risks to miners because of the explosives. The coal dust generated by the drilling and explosives is also a health hazard when continuously inhaled. This is the oldest method of coal mining.
Sep 13, 2018nbsp018332However, coal production remains a vital element of the worlds energy supply, providing 40 of the worlds electricity. With the US still contributing 13 of the worlds coal, American coal mines can still be profitable and productive despite the rise of natural gas and renewable energy.
Aerial photography and mapping methods photogrammetry are increasing in usefulness, particularly in the exploration and mining of surface deposits. Photogrammetric methods are relatively easy and inexpensive, can be adjusted to any scale, and are highly accurate in any terrain. Aerial photography can be conducted at an altitude designed to produce maps that show drainage configuration, roads, buildings, lakes, streams, timber, power lines, railroads, and fences or other features that may be missed by a ground survey.
Drilling is the most reliable method of gathering information about a coal deposit and the mining conditions. It provides physical samples of the coal and overlying strata for chemical and physical analysis.
Numerous factors are associated with a drilling program. One is the spatial pattern of the holes in an exploration area. When very large areas are being studied, hole spacings vary greatly and generally are not in any set pattern. When the program is narrowed to a specific target area, a grid pattern is most common. In areas where coal is known to exist, closely spaced drill-hole patterns are required.
Exploration of coal outcrops may be accomplished with dozer cuts at regular intervals. Dozer cutting provides information on the attitude of the coal and on the nature of the overburdenimportant factors with regard to machine operation.
Further, coal mining facilities maintain their own rail cars and tracks on properties all around the United States. The steel industry is key customer for railroads in 2011 the Class I railroads transported more than 126,000 million metric tons of metallic ores, metals and products 1.
In 1970, for example, 260 coal miners lost their lives in the United States 47 coal miners died in 1993. During this period, USBM research had played an important role, providing much of the breakthrough technology to reduce accidents, fatalities, and health-related problems in the U.S. coal mining industry.
The worlds top 10 largest coal mining companies continues to steer the steady growth of the global coal mining industry in 2020. Coal is currently one of the most commonly used energy resources on earth, with the continuously increasing demand driven by coal requirements for several purposes and rise in electricity generation at large, many worlds largest coal mining companies are.
Coal is the most abundant fossil fuel in the United States. The origin goes back 300 million years ago. Coal is a combustible, black or brownish sedimentary rock which is composed mainly of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. There are four basic types which can be distinguished lignite, subbituminous, bituminous and anthracite. In the United States all of these types occur.
Regarding the coal ranks, bituminous is mined mostly in the East and the Midwest, subbituminous is mined only in the western states, lignite in the Gulf Coast and North Dakota and anthracite in small quantities in Pennsylvania. Coal mining industry development promotes improvement of coal mining equipment in America.
Coal has been an energy source since 100 years ago in the United States. It helped to provide many basic needs like transportation for people and heating. Coal production grew permanently from the colonial period and has a long tradition.
In recent years about 90 of coal production in the United States has been consumed at domestic electric power plants. Because of secure, abundantdomestic reserves and relatively low prices coal use grew. Mine productivity has increased because of the demand and so larger and larger mines accrued. Also larger, efficient mining machinery are used, technology and control systems advanced. Today the United States are the second largest global consumer of coal after China.
Coal is generally mined by two methods surfacing or opencast mining and underground mining methods. The choice of mining method is mainlydetermined by the properties of the coal deposit.Underground mining currently accounts forabout 60 of world coal production althoughin some large coal producing countriessurface mining is more common. Surfacemining accounts for about 80 of productionin Australia, but it is used forabout 67 of coal exploitationproductionin the USA.
Surface mining ndash also known as opencast oropen cut mining ndash is only economic when thecoal seam is near the surface. This methodrecovers a higher proportion of the coaldeposit than underground mining as all coalseams are exploited ndash 90 or more of the coalcan be recovered.
Almost all coal produced in the U.S. is used to make electricity. It also plays a key role in industries such as steel, cement and paper.Production dropped in recently years as utilities made less electricity in general and from coal in particular.Coal will remain the dominate source of fuel for electricity generation through 2035 even as renewable energy from wind and solar along with natural gas gain ground.

Coal mining - Coal mining - Prospecting and exploration The fundamental objective of coal prospecting is to discover coal resources through a search. In areas where coal mining has not been previously practiced, the search process should result in obtaining coal samples that give reasonable evidence of the existence of a coal seam. Once a seam has been discovered, considerable further work is.
